Shirley Mae Speer

Shirley Mae (McGuire) Speer, age 89, of Longville, Minnesota, passed away at her home on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. 

Shirley was born on September 22, 1929, in Leads, Iowa, to Clayton and Hattie (Rose) McGuire.  She grew up in Leads and attended Hawthorne Elementary School and Leads High School.  She married Richard “Dick” Speer on May 30, 1948. Following their marriage, Shirley and Dick lived in Westmont, Illinois, and Downers Grove, Illinois, and then in 1978 they moved to Longville where they resided until the present time. Shirley worked for Ace-Longville Builders Supply in Longville for many years until her retirement.

Shirley loved flowers and her flower gardens.  She was active in the Longville Lions from 1978 to 2010.  In addition to her marriage of 71 years, Shirley loved her dogs Boof and Bullet, walking in the woods, and dancing with Dick.

Shirley was preceded in death by her mother and father and brother Ken.  She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dick and daughter Karen Wheeler; sons Douglas (Terry) Speer, Thomas (Elaine) Speer, and Robert (Peggy) Speer; grandchildren Justin (Deena) Fyksen, Brenton (Patty) Fyksen, Teonna, Kari, Kelsey, Janice, Jeff, Jenna, Drew, Bryan, Jessica, Caleb, Jeremy, and Becky; 15 great-grandchildren; niece Lisa Speer and nephew Kemer Speer.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at Community Church of Longville with a gathering of friends one hour prior to the service.  A private inurnment will be held at a later date.  Arrangements were made by Dennis Funeral Home/Midwest Cremation Association, Walker, Minnesota.
