David Robert Miller

David Robert Miller, age 78, of Warner, SD, formerly of Hackensack, MN, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021, at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen, SD.

David was born on May 18, 1942, in Farmington, MN, to John C. and Louise (Schoenhofen) Miller. He graduated from high school with his GED and went on to college for two years. David served six years in the Army Reserves in Walker, MN. He then worked as a carpenter in Minneapolis and went on to become a cabinet-maker and stonemason and moved back to Walker in 1973. He spent most of his life in the Hackensack area, married Gloria Wilhelm, and moved to Warner SD, where they’ve lived for the last 20 years. David was a devout Catholic. He loved the outdoors as evidenced by his love of trapping, hunting, gardening, reading, woodworking, gunsmithing, and bird watching. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and Minnesota Trappers Association, the American Legion in South Dakota, and a member of the Alano Club in Aberdeen. David passed away on the 37th anniversary of his sobriety. His family remembers him as intelligent, compassionate, and a storyteller who was gifted at painting pictures with words. He was serious about politics and the things that mattered.

David will be greatly missed by his wife Gloria; stepsons Neil (Carey) and Clare (Laura); sons Vince (Deborah) and David; daughter Alice; brother Don; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack and his sister Dorothy Swingley.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hackensack, MN on Saturday, January 16, at 1:00with visitation one hour before the service. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery, Hackensack.  A special thank you is given to the hospital care staff at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital Cancer Center in Aberdeen.  All memorials will be given to the Alano Club in Aberdeen.
