Dwight “Iggy” Sayers, age 74 of Red Lake, began his journey to the spirit world on February 21, 2026 at Sanford in Fargo, North Dakota.
Dwight was born on December 1, 1951 to Matthew “Baybomb” Sayers and Ethel Dolson in Red Lake, MN. He graduated from Red Lake. Dwight married Carolyn Downwind on December 2, 1970 in Wilton, MN. They were married for 55 years and together they had four children. Dwight worked for Red Lake Food Distribution for 20 years, from January 1992 to February 2012. He then worked at Red Lake Casino Transportation until retiring. He played softball in his younger days for The Chiefs, East Side Red Lake and Clearbrook League Ojibwe.
Dwight is survived by his wife: Carolyn Sayers; children: Kerry Sayers (Mpls), Bruce Sayers Sr (Duluth) and Randy Sayers Sr (Red Lake); special grandkids: Kaliann, Ayden, Ava and Ceigh Sayers; grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; sisters: Darlene Donnell, Sherrlene “Sugie” Roberts and Alfreda Sayers; brothers: Fabian Sayers and John Charnoski.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Matthew and Ethel Sayers; son: Dwight “Irv” Sayers Jr; grandson: Dillon James Sayers; brothers: Matthew “Billy” Sayers, Ricky Sayers, Bruce Sayers and Francis “Boogie” Downwind Sr; and nephew: Harley Sayers.
A wake will begin at 12 PM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026 at the New Red Lake Center and will continue until the service at 1 PM on Friday, March 6, 2026 with Father Tom Niehaus. Active Pallbearers will be Bruce Sayers Jr, Brennon Sayers, Craig Sayers, Kendrick Sayers, Randy Sayers Jr, Chandler May, Dave Dudley Sr, ReShawn Graves, Lyle, Shawn and Ricky Chaboyea, Ayden Sayers. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeff Donnell, John Charnoski, Duane “Ole” Spears, Barry Oakgrove, Pat Defoe, John Charnoski, Rodrick “Mister” Sayers, Desmond Sayers, Ange Charnoski, Mary E. Cook, Donald “Buckwheat” Graves, Raelynn Sayers, Herman “Tutter” Downwind, Dave Downwind. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery in Red Lake, MN. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, serving Northern Minnesota.
