Francis "Frank" Downwind Obituary

Francis “Frank” Downwind, Makwa Gaa-Nibaad—Sleeping Bear of the Kingfisher Clan—an enrolled member of the Red Lake Nation, made his journey to the spirit world on April 21, 2026, surrounded by love.

Frank lived his life in a good way, guided by his deep love for his people, his relatives, and especially his daughter, Aaliya. He carried himself as an Ogichidaa—a warrior—not through force, but through care, responsibility, humor, and presence. He showed up for others, especially the youth, offering guidance, accountability, and belief when it was needed most. His life reflected what it means to live in relationship—with community, with culture, and with purpose.

He had a gift for bringing light into every space he entered. His laughter, his teasing, his stories, and even his quiet presence carried medicine. Frank reminded us that joy is part of healing, and that gathering  together—in laughter, in food, in shared moments—is sacred. He was known for his generosity, his strength, and his ability to make people feel seen, valued, and cared for.

Frank’s journey included his time at Hennepin Technical College, and more importantly, his lifelong work within community—helping guide, support, and uplift others. He believed in people, often before they believed in themselves, and that belief continues to live on through those he impacted.

He was welcomed into the spirit world by his father, Francis “Boog” Downwind; his sister, Rose Downwind; his paternal grandparents, Francis Xavier Downwind and Dorthy Downwind; and his maternal grandparents, Ray and Ruth Gerring. Though we grieve his physical absence, we know he is now reunited with those who have gone before him.

He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Aaliya Downwind, who was the center of his world. He is also survived by his mother, Lisa Gerring; his sister, Kelly Downwind; and his brothers, Desmond Gerring, Joseph Tahdooahnippah, and Redmond Tahdooahnippah. He is further remembered and carried by many relatives, friends, and community members whose lives were forever shaped by his presence, his humor, and his love. Though his time here feels far too short, we understand in our way that this is not the end of his journey. His spirit continues on. He remains with us—in the stories we tell, the laughter we carry, and the love that continues to surround his name.

A traditional wake will begin at 6PM on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at the Minnesota Indian Women's Resource Center in Minneapolis, and continue until the service on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, serving Northern Minnesota.
