Lewis Edward Barney

Lewis Edward Barney, age 55, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 3, 2026, to the shock of his family and friends.

Lewis was born on September 17, 1970 to JoAnn Angeline Barney and Louis Edward Wise. Lewis traveled far and wide, but settled back home in Sawyer, the community he loved. He lived there with his fiancé Stacy and his sons. No matter the obstacle, he took it on with style, courage and, oh yes, all that BLING! Lewis’ big smile, charm and charisma were unmatched by any and really did light up the room! He loved cooking and sharing food with his family. Lewis loved to drive around in the sunshine with the top down. Lewis was known for loving the land and his people. He enjoyed ricing, fishing, agate hunting, spending time with his elders or snuggling up with his dogs to watch a good basketball game. Lewis always greeted everyone with a huge smile and an even bigger laugh. He will be missed by his family, friends and his entire Sawyer community. Soar as high as you can, BIG GUY. Until the time comes we see each other again.

Lewis is survived by his fiancé, Stacy Austin-Houle; his children: Gabrielle Barney, Lewis Barney Jr, Vincent Barney, Gloria Barney and Adrianna Barrett; his grandchildren whom he dearly loved: Mason, Gemma and Santana; 6 brothers and 5 sisters, many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father; uncles: Douglas Wise and William “Billy” Wise; grandparents: Herman “Abe” Wise and June Wise; and other family and friends.

A wake will begin at 5 PM on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 at the Sawyer Community Center and will continue until the service at 10 AM on Thursday, January 8, 2026 with Spiritual Leader Charlie Smith. Burial will be at the Holy Family Cemetery in Cloquet, MN. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, serving Northern Minnesota.
