Maria Rose Desjarlait, age 22, travelled to the spirit world on Sunday, September 24, 2023, in Fargo, ND.

Maria was born on September 4, 2001, in Bemidji, MN, to Lonny and Iris (Black) Desjarlait, Sr. She made her home in Red Lake. Maria was an outgoing free spirit with a wild streak. She loved attending pow wows and was Junior Miss Red Lake in 2008. She enjoyed crafting, making blankets for family and friends. She loved spending time with her children, nieces, and nephews. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children: Iris Johnson and David Johnson, Jr.; father, Lonny Desjarlait, Sr.; siblings: Polly Desjarlait, Samantha (Rodney) Jackson, Nahannie Desjarlait, Lonny Desjarlait, Jr., Kimber Stately; step-mother, Peggy Owens; half brothers, Paul Johnson, Sr., Joey Johnson, half sister, Chastity Johnson as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Those greeting her in the spirit world are her mother, Iris Desjarlait; maternal grandparents: Gladys and George Maxwell; paternal grandparents: Simon and Rose Desjarlait; aunts: Paulette Barrett, Rose Desjarlait, Pauline Barrett, Ida Black; uncles: Douglas Desjarlait, Julius Maxwell, Sr., Kelly Maxwell.

A traditional wake will begin at Noon on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the New Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake and continue until the ceremony on Monday, October 2, 2023. Active pallbearers will be: Bruce Jourdain, Jr., David Johnson, Sr., Justin Johnson, Brian Johnson, George Maxwell, Julius Maxwell, Jr., Jayshawn Roberts and alternates: Wes Cloud, Jr., Brandon Fairbanks, Marlyn Black, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: Sammi Jackson, Polly Desjarlait, Desirae Downwind, Connie Neadeau, Amanda Kingbird, Gloria Jackson, Loree Jackson, Maggie Jackson, Roselee Desjarlait, Hopey Dow, Brandy Desjarlait, Rodney Jackson, Shawn May, Sr. Jan Head, Leranda Johnson, Val Desjarlait, Georgianna Jourdain, Dave Desjarlait, Renee Fairbanks, Lisha Johnson. Burial will be at the Desjarlait Family Burial Grounds in Red Lake. Arrangement provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service of Walker & Hackensack, MN.
