Michael Cobenais Obituary

Michael Joseph Cobenais, Minogiizhig (Good Day), of the Bear Clan, age 55, began his journey to the spirit world on June 29, 2026 in Red Lake, MN.

Michael was born on January 18, 1971 to Dorothy and Duane Cobenais Sr in Red Lake, MN. Michael graduated from Red Lake High School in 1989 and married his wife LeeAnn Brown in 2006. He did a variety of jobs over the years, including independent carpentry, firefighter, commercial fisherman, worked at Seven Clans Casino TRF as a blackjack dealer for many years and at Red Lake Casino as a General Manager from 2011 to 2017, was a driver for Red Lake Comp Health for a short time and a Coordinator at the Redby Community Center for a couple years. When he got sick, he ended up staying home and taking care of his youngest daughters, who he loved and cherished dearly. Michael had many hobbies, including ice fishing, watching his girls play sports, hanging out with his daughters, going on rides, he loved watching his sport channels, loved being outside, going to the casino and listening to music. He was always willing to help where he was needed.

Michael is survived by his daughters Andi (Claude Jr) Cobenais, Alexandra (Courtney) Roy, Tiyanna Cobenais and Tyleisha Cobenais; 5 grandchildren Chase, Ahlicia, Jaycel, Duane and Landon; his wife LeeAnn Cobenais; two boys he raised as his own Steven Neadeau Jr and Luke Jones; brothers Myron Cobenais Sr and Gary Cobenais; special nephew Derrick; great-nephew Drayden Cobenais; and numerous nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Duane Cobenais Sr; brother Duane Cobenais Jr; three daughters Michaela Jo Cobenais, Noelle Roy and Michaelana Roy; niece Latoya Schoenborn; aunt Sharlyn “Punks” Ramsey; sister-in-law Charlene Brown; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A wake will begin at 2 PM on Friday, July 3, 2026 at the New Red Lake Center and will continue until the service at 2 PM on Sunday, July 5, 2026 with Floyd “Buck” Jourdain and Victoria Irons Graves officiating.  Active Pallbearers will be Duane Cobenais III, Derrick Cobenais, Derald Cobenais, Drayden Cobenais, Myron Cobenais Jr, Donovan Cobenais, Vincent Schoenborn, Darion Cobenais, Chase Cobenais, Anthony Howard, Leonard Spears, Roger White Jr, Kailem White, Bronx White.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Bill Stately, Dawn Barrett, June Houlstine, Daryl Bohn, Sheldon Brown, Richard Cook, Jim Roy, Darwin Sumner, Kelsi Brown, Michelle Cobenais, Jonathan Richards, Ava May Prentice, Vincent Brown, Brandon Howard Jr, Jason Head, Richard Clark, Joann Anderson, Lee Anderson, Tasha Brown. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery in Red Lake, MN. Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, serving Northern Minnesota.
