Rodney Prentice Jr Obituary

Rodney Dale Prentice Jr, Mizhakiyaasige (Sun Shining Through the Clouds) Waabizheshi (Marten Clan), age 51 of Red Lake, began his journey to the spirit world on July 30, 2026 in Fargo, North Dakota.

Rod was born on July 19, 1975 to Rodney Prentice Sr and Cynthia (Smith) Prentice.  He worked a variety of jobs in his life, including at Red Lake Detention, Red Lake Tribal Courts as a Court Prosecutor, Court Administrator, Judge, Advocate, then moved on to LEAD Program Coordinator. These are just a few of the jobs he had. Rod loved spending time with his children and other family and he also helped raise his two nephews. He loved teaching his children and nephews to hunt and fish in the traditional ways, always giving thanks and being respectful of the land.  He enjoyed going on family trips and visiting casinos. He loved football and the Green Bay Packers was his favorite team. He loved going to powwows to play moccasin games and meeting new people. He had many good friends and was always helping others; he had a really good heart and was just a really good guy.

Rod is survived by his dad Rodney Prentice Sr; sister Mary; brother Paul; children Lance, Hayden, Erwin (Lydia), Shaunice (Lydell), Juiliana and Tony; nephews Dorian (Kyleigh), Cayden; and one great-niece Satala.

He is preceded in death by his mom Cynthia Rose; grandparents Patrick Smith, Irene Smith (Fairbanks), Paul Prentice and Mary Prentice (Martin); aunts Sylvia Spence, Val Pankow, Erma Lussier, Val Johnson, Gloria Smith, Phyllis Smith, Dorothy Beaulieu, Elsie Fairbanks, Lynette Tyler and Marie Lawrence; uncles Lee Lussier Sr, Charles Smith Sr, Patrick Smith, Victor Roy Sr and Paulie Prentice; cousins Trish Prentice, Della Prentice, Barbara Westbrook, Audrey Prentice, Jon Prentice, Michael Roy, Victor Roy Jr and Kevin Beaulieu; nephew Logan Roy; and many other family members.

A wake will begin at 1 PM on Sunday, August 2, 2026 at the New Red Lake Center and will continue until the service at 10 AM on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 with Spiritual Leaders Zac Earley and Ty Stately.  Active Pallbearers will be his sons Lance, Erwin, Tony, Dorian, Cayden and son-in-law Lydell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jason Lawrence, Chad Prentice, Mike Fairbanks, Lee Lussier Jr, Will Tyler, Jack Johnson, Mike Barrett, Ira Lussier, Kenton Stillday, Eddie Lone, Ray Adams, William Strong, Gordon “Chopper” Fairbanks, Ray and Ronda Gilge, Ange Charnoski, Amanda Charnoski. Burial will be at St Mary’s Cemetery in Red Lake, MN.  Arrangements provided by Whispering Pines Funeral & Cremation Service, serving Northern Minnesota.
